Furnace Types
There are three basic types of furnaces: Single-Stage, Two-Stage, or Modulating.
Each of these furnaces runs on natural gas, electricity, or propane, with natural gas being the most common fuel type for a standard Saskatchewan household.
Most older furnaces are mid-efficiency, operating at a level between 60% - 80%, while newer furnaces are high-efficiency, operating at a level of at least 95% or higher.
Single-Stage
Single-stage furnaces only have one heat output setting, meaning that they are either fully on or completely off. When the thermostat signals for heat, the furnace operates at its full capacity until the set temperature is reached, and then it shuts off.
These furnaces are commonly found in older homes and are best suited for smaller spaces where precise temperature control is not a top priority.
PETE’S PICK!
Two-Stage
Two-stage furnaces have two heat output settings – a high stage and a low stage. The furnace operates at the lower stage for milder temperatures and switches to the higher stage only when more heat is required.
These furnaces offer better temperature control and efficiency and are generally quieter than single-stage furnaces. They are good for homes of any size and are a great way to increase your home heating efficiency while saving a lot of money in the long run.
Modulating
Modulating furnaces continuously adjust the heat output in small increments to match the precise heating needs of the home. They can operate at various levels between low and high, providing a more consistent and comfortable indoor temperature.
These furnaces offer the highest level of temperature control and energy efficiency, but because of these precise controls, they require a special type of thermostat and are often in need of more frequent maintenance.

CALCULATE YOUR SAVINGS
How much could you be saving on a more efficient furnace?
A furnace between 60% and 80% efficiency works overtime to heat your home, leaving you with a higher bill.
Switching to a high-efficiency furnace may be more expensive up front, but on average, you can earn back your investment within 6 years, and then save money in the long run.
